Se trata de un shamisen o samisen, también conocido como sangen, y es un instrumento musical de cuerda. Posee tres cuerdas y debe ser tocado con una uñeta llamada bachi. La pronunciación en japonés es «shamisen», pero en la época de Edo era conocido como «samisen». Sin embargo, algunas veces «jamisen» es usado como un sufijo, por ejemplo Tsugari-jamisen.
